the missing gecko

This week Caleb is in charge of Alex’s gecko, Stripe, since Alex is not here for a few days. Caleb just loves his new job. Almost immediately after Alex left, Caleb got Stripe out of the cage and he held him several times throughout the afternoon.

Later that evening after Caleb had been in bed for a couple hours, the thought occurred to me that I should go check on Stripe, to make sure he was in his cage where he should be. This was definitely divine intervention since I have never had the thought to check on the lizard before in the 2 plus years he has lived with us.

Sure enough, Stripe was nowhere to be found. So I shook Caleb and called his name and then shook him some more until he woke up and then I asked him where Stripe was. He sat up and pointed to the other end of his bed where he had made a cozy little bed for Stripe.

Um, yeah right. Only a seven year old could expect Stripe to “stay” there like a good little gecko. The gecko was not where Caleb had left him. I decided not to panic. If a search did not yield the gecko, then I could panic.

Caleb quickly found him and started to hand him to me. Um, I have never held the gecko and I didn’t plan to right then. I’ll let him live in a tank in the boys’ room and I’ll buy crickets and even change his water and dump the crickets in there on occasion, but I’m not going to TOUCH the gecko. No thank you. (makes me cringe thinking about it)

Caleb needed to get himself down out of the middle bunk and put Stripe back in the tank and never take him to bed again.

That is so cute! Poor Caleb. He probably thought he was being especially watchful of the gecko.
