a little picture and a big boy

I was cleaning out my purse and found one of Alex’s wallet-sized “trading cards” from last year’s Upward basketball season. When Alex saw it, he said that he had grown a lot taller since that photo was taken. He paused a few seconds and wondered if his picture now would fit on a trading card.

The he asked if we could buy 2 dozen pictures this year. When I didn’t answer right away, he said that he wanted to get 4 dozen so he would have 48 cards. I laughed and said, “That’s pretty good math Alex.”

Now why doesn’t he instantly know the answer of 12 x 4 when faced with a flashcard or a problem on paper? That’s ok. He knows how to do math for real life.
